The Campbell River Curling Club continues to Celebrate Curling in Campbell River for 60 years.
The Campbell River and District Winter Club opened its doors in January 1964 and is one of the few curling clubs remaining totally owned by its shareholders.
Back in October 1963 the cost to build the rink was $70,000.00, this figure included the building, ice plant, property and rocks.
The "Hone" granite rocks were ordered from Scotland and the dream of a Curling Club in Campbell River had become a reality.
For the past 60 years, the club has been successful in many ways. As a nonprofit organization we are proud of our history and our commitment to offering the sport of Curling to the residents of Campbell River and surrounding areas.
Our building and plant continue to be upgraded with our last large purchase being a new metal roof in 2020. Many thanks and appreciation for being rewarded some grants to assist us financially in that project.
As the years have gone by, the longevity of those once new stones from Scotland had reached the end of their time so the fundraising began in hopes to purchase new ones.
Vice President, Kevin May working with Canada Curling Stones had found new "inserted granite rocks" and as a membership we knew if we only sold weekly 50/50 tickets, these rocks wouldn't be ours for years to come. So, with the support of our membership, local business and largely due to the generous support of both WestUrban Developments and the Rotary of Campbell River we were able to purchase them sooner than expected. The day had come after 60 years to retire the old ones, and we are curling today with the new ones.
We are so proud to be part of a community where companies like WestUrban have supported us by donating funds along with the amazing work of Rotary Campbell River and their generous contribution to our club.
On behalf of The Board of Directors, thank you for supporting the Campbell River Curling Club.
